Abstract

623,631. Moulding synthetic resins, cellulose derivatives &c. PRESTWICH, F. M. April 16, 1945, No. 9471. [Class 87 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] A web 13 of papier-mÔchÚ, linoleum, metal foil or other sheet material (excluding rubber and rubber-coated materials and woven fabric) is impressed with an intaglio or relief pattern between rollers 14, 16, and then passed beneath the discharge outlet 19 of a supply of mobile plastic, so that the recesses are filled therewith, then beneath a scraper 20 which removes excess plastic. The web with its plastic is then treated to convert the piastic to a .flexible solid state, as by passing it through a curing oven 21. The plastic article so formed, which, according to the adjustment of the scraper may be either a sheet with a relief pattern or in the form of lace, is then stripped from the web, or may be left on the web to form a composite sheet material. The plastic may be thermoplastic or thermosetting resin or cellulose ester or ether. The curing may be incomplete so that the plastic surface is tacky and a fabric backing may be applied to the surface, before stripping from the web, by the roller 24 ; the fabric may have a picture or pattern thereon. Alternatively the surface may be roughened by a gas blast, which may contain abrasive powder. To facilitate the stripping of the plastic article from the web 13 the latter may be coated with wax, varnish, or thermosetting resin, or with powdered metal which remains in and ornaments the plastic article. The finished articles may be used as doyleys, furnishings, ornaments, garments and transfers for reinforcing parts of garments likely to become worn or frayed.
