Abstract
906,797. Rubber-coated fabrics. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Aug. 10, 1960 [Sept. 1, 1959], No. 27687/60. Drawings to Specification. Class 140. Rubber-coated fabric sheet material suitable for the production of grooved diaphragms is produced by applying a layer of uncured rubber composition to at least one side of a fabric, pressing the thus-coated fabric while heating it to curing temperature for a period of time sufficient to cure the rubber layer partially to 50 to 90% of full cure, whereby the fabric is anchored against under movement relative to the plane of the rubber layer when grooved diaphragms are subsequently moulded from the partially cured sheet. Both sides of the fabric may be coated with a layer of the rubber composition, the two layers being of approximately equal thickness. The uncured rubber-coated fabric may be continuously and uniformly pressed and heated in a moving arcuate pressure zone formed between the cylindrical surface of a heated rotating drum and an endless pressureband looped about a major portion of said surface and moving therewith. Flexible diaphragms having an annular groove in the intended region of flexure may be made by simultaneously pressing and heating the partiallycured sheet material in a grooved mould at a pressure, temperature, and for a period of time sufficient to cure the rubber coating fully. The rubber composition may comprise a natural or synthetic rubber, e.g. butadiene-styrene copolymer, and may contain a sufficient amount of free sulphur to cure it fully; the pressing and heating of the uncured rubber-coated fabric being carried out so as to cause 50 to 90% of the sulphur to react with the rubber, based on the weight of sulphur needed to cure the coating fully. The rubber coating may also contain polyvinyl chloride. A primer coating, which may contain butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer, phenol - formaldehyde and paracoumaroneindene resins, may be applied to the fabric which may be a woven cotton or nylon fabric, non-woven, or open weave fabric made from fairly heavy threads. The surface of the coated sheet material may be dusted with mica and/or a synthetic wax.
