Abstract

623,013. Free-piston compressors and gas generators. PESCARA, R. P. March 29, 1946, No. 9881. Convention date, Feb. 26, 1945. Addition to 605,199. [Classes 7 (i) and 7 (ii)] In internal combustion operated free-piston compressors and gas generators of the type comprising two free-piston assemblies each constituted by a power piston rigid with at least one compressor piston, the two assemblies being constrained to move oppositely by a synchronising mechanism and having inside each compressor cylinder an eccentrically located guide bar which is separate from the synchronising mechanism, which is fixed and lies parallel to the direction of movement of the free piston assembly and which passes through the compressor piston, a slipper, in which the guide bar is a sliding fit, is so, mounted on each compressor piston as to be capable of a limited movement in a radial direction but no movement in a circumferential direction relatively to the piston. In the Fig. 1 a free piston assembly comprising a power piston 5, 51 rigid with a compressor or pneumatic energy accumulator piston 6, 61 is guided in part by a slipper 31 which slides in the interior of the cylinder 1 of the power piston and is connected to the free-piston assembly by a universal joint 32. The power piston is in three parts comprising respectively a crown 5a, trunk 5c and neck part 5b which connects the parts 5a and 5c together and is provided with a part spherical surface on which the slipper is mounted. The slipper is divided longitudinally. Each free piston assembly is also guided by a guide bar 20 which passes through the compressor piston and by a tube 11 rigidly fixed to the cover of the compressor cylinder and sliding within a gland 14, which is universally mounted on the assembly. Each tube 11 telescopically fits over a tube 16 fixed to the interior of the power piston. The tubes 11, 16 together form a channel for the passage of cooling fluid through a tube 18 to the rear of the crown of the power piston. The compressor pistons are each provided where the guide 20 passes through them with a gland (Figs. 2 and 3) which allows relative movement in a radial, but not in a circumferential direction. A slipper 21 has flat surfaces 21a which enable it to slide axially in, a gland member 34 fixed to the compressor piston by screws which serve to load the packing 35. Starting air is introduced to the outer cushioning ends of the compressor cylinder through a duct 20a which interconnects the guides 20 which are hollow. Specification 605,196 is referred to.
