Abstract

622,992. Stud and socket fastenings. SIMMONS, C. A. Nov. 15, 1944, No. 29893/47. Divided out of 622,728. [Class 44] A stud and socket fastening for securing an outer plate to an inner structure is provided with a threaded receptacle supporting part having threads extending close to the outer plate, with which threads the hole in the outer plate is aligned, comprising a receptacle or socket element having threads engageable with the threads on the supporting part, and a short stud element disposable in the hole and carrying means engageable with the plate to hold the stud element against inward movement relative to the plate. The fastener is adapted to hold together an outer plate 10 and an inner plate 11, Fig. 1. A receptacle support 19, 20 is secured to the inner plate 11, and has an internally threaded part 20, with diametrically opposed bores 21. An externally tubular receptacle or socket 24 screws into the part 20, and is provided with an uneven number of external longitudinal grooves 25 narrower than the diameter of the bores 21, and a bail shaped spring locking strip 26 is curved around the part 20 and has inturned ends 27 adapted to pass through bores 21 into one of the grooves 25. When turned into the position of Fig. 1, the ends 27 cam out of grooves 25 and unlock the socket. The inner face of the socket is formed with opposite ledges 30, Fig. 4, each having a hollow recess 31 and a stop and cam faces 33 to lead the pins of the stud, which enter through opposite passages 34 between the ledges 30, into the recesses 31 on rotation of the stud. The latter may be of the construction described in Specification 622,728 and fastening is effected in the usual way, socket 24 being previously adjusted to the required position and locked by the bail 26. The relative positions of the parts and the direction of the threads on the socket are such that when the latter is not locked, rotation of the stud will cause the socket to move inwardly and force flange 44 of the lock member against flange 38 of the stud to draw plates 10, 11, together. Various forms of socket member are described. Fig. 6 shows a form in which the support 19a, 20a has the tubular portion 20a reversed and disposed in openings in plates 11b, 11c which form parts of a thick inner member. The support may be omitted, and the socket 24, Fig. 7, screwed directly into the plate 11d and locked by a nut 19d. In the form shown in Fig. 10, the socket 24 is screwed into a cup shaped support which has a threaded extension 19 adapted to screw into one of the members to be joined. In a similar form, the support and the socket are made integral. In place of a spring stud, a stud 35k, Fig. 14, with helical bayonet slots 30k may be used, engaging a fixed bar 29k secured across the socket 24k.
