Abstract
622,728. Stud and socket fastenings. SIMMONS, C. A. Nov. 15, 1944, No. 22594. [Class 44] In a stud and socket fastening for securing together two plates, of the kind in which the stud has laterally extending pins engaging ramps in the socket, and spring means urging the pins into their retaining recesses, a short hollow rotatable stud 35, Figs. 1 and 2, with an open outer end formed with a flange 38 to engage the outer face of one plate, and a substantially closed inner end 36, houses a tubular lock member 41 sliding in the stud. The mem- . ber 41 has a closed outer end 42, an open inner end, and two pins 40 projecting through slots in the stud. A spring 45 within the lock member and stud is compressed between the closed inner end of the stud and the closed outer end of the lock member. The inner plate or structure is provided with engagement parts and passage openings to receive the pins. The arrangement permits the use of a long spring while the distance from the head of the stud to the pins is kept short. In the form shown in Figs. 1, 2, a receptacle support 19, 20 is secured to the inner plate 11, and is internally threaded to receive a receptacle 24 formed, with passages 34, ramps 30 and notches 31 for the pins 40. For adjustment of the receptacle 24, an uneven number of longitudinal grooves 25 are formed therein, and the inturned ends of a spring locking strip 26 project through bores in the support 20 so that one end of the strip engages in one of the grooves when the strip is at right angles to the stud. The ends of the strip are formed so as to cam out of the grooves when turned to the position shown in Fig. 1 and release receptacle 24 for adjustment. The closed end of the lock member 41 has an extended flange nesting in the flange 38 of the stud and provided with a screw-driver slot 43. The stud is retained in the plate 10 by a split ring 48 having a bead, located nearer one edge to allow adjustment by reversal. A modified form of split ring has its outer face spherical to permit limited ball and socket movement. In the form shown in Fig. 6, the receptacle support 20a is located within openings in the plates 11b, 11c, or, in thick plates, the receptacle support may be dispensed with and the receptacle screwed into a tapped opening in the plates, a locking nut or wedge or pin being used to secure it in position. In the form shown in Fig. 9. the receptacle 24h of hard metal, is held in place by a grommet 20h of relatively soft metal, part of which is gripped between the countersinks in the plates 10, 11. The receptacle may be screw threaded into a bolt shaped member 20i, Fig. 10 having a threaded part 19 screwing into one of the members to be secured together. The receptacle is secured in the member 20i by a pin 27. In this form a separate receptacle may be dispensed with, and the ramps and notches formed in the bolt shaped part. Another form is shown in Fig. 14, in which the plates 110, 111 have aligned holes with radial marginal slots, preferably not registering in both plates, for the passage of the pins. A locking plate 118 is fixed to the inner plate, provided with an aperture with radial slots, and having its edges turned up to form a camming rim 124 with notches 125. Stud 126 is generally similar to those above described, having a flange 129 and a sliding inner member 141 with a slotted head carrying the cross-pins. In another form, Fig. 18, the inner layer 145 has projections 146 near the hole and remote from the slots 115. Specification 622,992 is referred to.
