Abstract

Relates to filled or unfilled moulding powders comprising a fusible, soluble condensation product of not more than an equimolar amount of formaldehyde with phenol, m-cresol, resorcinol, 3 : 5-xylenol or commercial mixtures of these and their isomers and a methylene-donating substance such as hexamethylenetetramine, paraformaldehyde, or a polyoxymethylene, the degree of condensation of the resin-forming ingredients being such that satisfactory flow is obtained in a hot mould, and the composition being capable of curing to the infusible, insoluble stage by heat and pressure. Additional ingredients specified are mould lubricants, e.g. stearin; fillers, e.g. wood-flour, paper, cotton, mica, asbestos, string, diced fabrics; bases, e.g. lime or magnesia; plasticizers, e.g. furfural (in the Provisional Specification); dyes; and pigments. According to the invention, such a composition comprises also a boric acid, preferably 0.1 to 15 per cent based on the resin-forming ingredients, which may be added dry or in solution (which according to the Provisional Specification, may be aqueous or alcoholic) at the initial blending stage or before, during, or after malaxating. Pure orthoboric acid is preferred, and a preferred composition comprises 6 per cent of boric acid and 2 per cent of lime or magnesia (calculated as above). In examples: novolacs prepared from (1) commercial phenol, (2) cresylic acid, and (3) phenol, cresylic acid and a commercial xylenol fraction are mixed with hexamethylenetetramine, wood-flour, magnesia (or calcium hydroxide), stearic acid, nigrosine and varying amounts of boric acid. The Provisional Specification includes the use, instead of boric acid, of aluminium hydroxide or oxide or alkali salts thereof or silicic acid or salts thereof.
