Abstract

An insecticidal composition free from unwanted resinous materials is prepared by extracting pyrethrum plants with a solvent and treating the resulting extract with an adsorbent solid to remove the resinous constituents. Suitable adsorbents are Fuller's earth, carbon, diatomite or bentonite, either activated or non-activated, or a mixture of two or more of these materials. The primary pyrethrum extract may consist of a solution of pyrethrums and oleo resins in petroleum ether. The final resin-free extract after concentration by distillation may be diluted with a solvent such as kerosene to form a spraying-solution. The spent adsorbent solid may be dried and mixed with an extender such as pyrophyllite to form a horticultural dust.
