Abstract
620,459. Lawn sprinklers. ROSE, A. G., and ROSE BROS. (GAINSBOROUGH), Ltd. Jan. 20, 1947, Nos. 1727 and 26500. [Class 69 (iii)] Apparatus of the type comprising a reaction jet rotary sprinkler 21, wherein the rotating arm 19 is geared to the driving wheels 12 of the structure carrying the rotary sprinkler, is provided with a guide wheel 14 adapted to embrace a track formed by the hose 18, for the purpose of guiding the sprinkler on a predetermined course. The guide wheel 14 is mounted in a swivel bracket 16 and a pair of guides 41 move the hose at sharp bends to prevent the driving wheel running over the hose. Rotation of the arm 19 drives a worm 24, mounted on the hollow shaft 23, which drives a worm wheel 26 mounted on a shaft 27 to which are attached crank-pins 29 carrying ratchet pawls 31 spaced 180 degrees with respect to one another, the ratchet pawls 31 co-operating with toothed wheels 32 on the drive shaft 13. In operation the hose is laid out in the path which it is intended the sprinkler shall follow and the end of the hose is doubled back and attached to a nipple 36. Water from the hose enters the sprinkler through a valve compartment 24 and passes to the sprinkler through hollow shaft 22. The guide wheel and guides 41 ensure that the sprinkler follows the course set by the hose. At the end of such path or at any intermediate point the sprinkler may be stopped by placing a clip 43 having an inclined plane as shown, which engages the lower end of the valve stem 39 and raises the valve 34 to a position where the water pressure snaps the valve shut and holds it closed until the pressure is removed by turning the water off at its source, or by kinking the hose momentarily by hand. In a modification shown in Fig. 6, the inclined edge of the clip 43 engages a hinged plate 49 which in turn engages the valve stem 48 to close the valve by water pressure as before. The distance of the ratchet pawls from the crank centre may be varied between either of the holes 33 to vary the speed.
