Abstract

619,991. Casting processes; moulds. BENSON, L. E., TURNBULL, J. S., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Nov. 6, 1946, No. 32985. [Class 83 (i)] In a method of casting, an additional piece or pieces of metal is cast substantially at the same time as the main object, and is so disposed in relation thereto and is of such shape and dimensions as to produce a predetermined temperature gradient in the object whereby the metal freezes progressively in a desired direction. The extra pieces may be cast either integrally with or separately from the main object.. Wedgeshaped pieces e, Fig. 2, are cast at the same time as the main plate or bar-shaped casting a, the freezing of which then occurs progressively from the bottom upwards. In a modification the additional portion e of similar longitudinal section, is tubular. In a further example the additional piece e, Fig. 5, is of annular form, surrounding a constriction f of the main casting a. The Provisional Specification states that the additional pieces may be cast slightly in advance of the main objects.
