Abstract

619,644. Drilling. SMALL & PARKES, Ltd., and HEBDITCH, A. K. Dec. 18, 1946, No. 37229. [Class 83 (iii)] A device for use in locating work to be drilled and the drilled hole to be countersunk in relation to a hole already formed in an article, such as a brake shoe, to which the work is to be secured by rivets or the like, comprises a vertical spindle A having a tapered end a and mounted in a sleeve B and spring-loaded operating means for imparting a relative movement longitudinally between the spindle and the sleeve. The sleeve is provided with a stop b<SP>1</SP> which limits its downward movement with respect to the spindle and is operated through bell crank levers D and a cable transmission device from a treadle. A spring E interposed between the sleeve and a housing C restores the sleeve to its normal position after displacement. For re-lining brakes, the tapered end a of the spindle is inserted in a hole in the brake shoe and the lining is drilled until the countersinking portion of the drill becomes operative when the tapered end a is withdrawn and the operation completed. A swarf guard G is provided. The spindle instead of the sleeve may be movable.
