Abstract

619,632. Helicopters. FAIREY AVIATION CO., Ltd., and ELLIS, G. B. L. Dec. 17, 1946, No. 37123. [Class 4] [Also in Group XXXIV] In order to avoid local wear of the flapping and pitch change bearings of a lifting rotor, at least one of the races of each bearing is caused to rotate so long as the rotor head is in rotation. As illustrated, the rotor head 10 is mounted on a fixed shaft 11 and is driven by a bevel pinion (not shown) on the engine. transmis - sion shaft meshing with a pinion 13. Drag links 25 are mounted on doublerow needle bearings 27, 28 for flapping movement, and on ball bearings 32. 33 for pitch change movement. The fixed shaft 11 carries a bevel wheel 16 meshing with a pinion 19 mounted at the inboard end of a shaft 20, the outboard end of the latter carrying a second pinion 31 and the spacing race 34 of the double bearing 32, 33. The shaft 20 rotates continuously while the rotor head is in rotation, thus ensuring continuous movement of the race 34. The pinion 31 on the shaft 20 meshes with a pinion 30a on the spacing race 30 of the needle bearing, to give continuous rotation of the race. The drag links are rotated for pitch changing by links 36 connected to stub members 35 and to a swash-plate controlled by the pilot.
