Abstract

619,338. Parallel rulers; navigational plotting instruments. LUARD, W. B. Dec. 3, 1946, No. 35769. [Class 97 (iii)] In a parallel rule consisting of two rulers a, b, Fig. 1, interconnected by a pair of crossed rigid links c, d of equal length normally interpivoted scissors-like at their mid-lengths with their ends sliding along guides g extending longitudinally along the rulers a, b, further guides h are provided along either or each ruler a, b wherein a compass rose attachment, Fig. 6, can slide. The compass rose attachment comprises a slide-block i<1> having a handle i2 and a clamping screw i<3>, fast with a lower compass card disc n on which is concentrically and rotatably mounted a smaller card j. Compass card n has a segmental scale n2 showing magnetic variation and a scale n<3> showing compass error, i.e. both variation and deviation, which co-operate with a deviation scale j<1> on the upper card j. The cards may be transparent or may be appropriately slotted. The lower link d of the crossed links may be provided with holes on each side of its mid-length for the alternative pivoting of the other link. To prevent slip of the rulers, the underside of each rule is ribbed and its control knob provided with a spring-urged, pointed-end, depressible plunger.
