Abstract
Colloidal silver is produced by a process comprising reacting in an aqueous colloidal medium a soluble silver salt and a reducing agent therefor in the presence of colloidal silver sulphide or silver selenide. In an example thiourea and silver nitrate are added to a solution of gelatine, digested at 125 DEG F., and then cooled to 90 DEG F. Silver nitrate solution is then added followed by excess p-hydroxy phenylamine acetic acid dissolved in caustic soda. Ethyl alcohol is added to precipitate the gelatin which is soaked in water then redispersed in water. In a further example, selenourea is used in place of thiourea. An alternative water permeable colloidal medium is an aqueous dispersion of polyvinyl alcohol; any silver salt soluble in water may be used, and whilst any reducing agent may be utilized the photographic developer type, e.g. hydroquinone, p-methylamino phenol sulphate, 1-phenyl-pyrazolidone-3, p-phenylene diamine and substitution derivatives are preferred. The product is used in the production of filter and anti-halation layers in photographic materials.
