619,258. Reciprocating saws. DURAND, G. R. H. VULLIET-. Nov. 28, 1946, Nos. 35310 and 35311. Convention dates, Dec. 6, 1945, and July 4, 1946..[Class 145 (ii)] In a method of sawing, a reciprocating saw blade is given a high speed motion, the amplitude of which extends at most to three tooth pitches in such a manner that the apex of each tooth describes a closed circular, elliptical or oval curve. As shown applied to a hand held saw, an electric motor or turbine drives a shaft 4 having an eccentric 5 which actuates a connecting rod 6 the movements of which are imparted to a lever 8 through swing bars 9 and 10 pivoted on a support 1 at 11 and 12 and connected to one another by a link 13. A fitting 17 carrying a blade 18 is connected to the rod 6 and the lever 8 by holes 14, 15 and 16 to form a deformable parallelogram. The curve described by each tooth is dependent on the holes in which the fitting is adjusted, holes 14 giving a circle and holes 15 and 16 ellipses whose axes have ratios 2 : 1 and 3 : 1 respectively. A blade whose pitch is twice the eccentricity will give an amplitude of 1 pitch tooth in position 14, 2 pitch teeth in position 15 and 3 pitch teeth in position 16. The arrangement may be such that the blade is given a quick return as described, a slow return, Fig. 5 (not shown), or equal times on forward or return strokes, Fig. 7 (not shown). In all cases the mechanism may be enclosed in an oil bath.
