Abstract

619,252. Soldering. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd., SHAW, J. D., and DAVIES, R. L. Nov. 27, 1946, No. 35237. [Class 83 (iv)] A cored solder wire has an outer tube of solder metal and a core comprising flux and solder in the proportion by weight of 25-45 per cent of flux to 75-55 per cent of solder, a proportion of the core solder consisting of a large number of minute pockets of metal filled with flux and distributed throughout the core. The solder powder is within the range from 60 mesh to dust, with not more than 5 per cent by weight of the particles being retained by a 90 mesh and not more than 5 per cent passing through a 150 mesh. A tube of solder metal of larger diameter than that required in the finished product and formed by extruding a 60/40 tin lead alloy is filled by forcing thereinto a mixture of one part of flux and two parts of powder at a temperature of 70‹ C. and then drawn down until a proportion of the larger particles of solder are caused to join by cold welding, and together with the aggregation of smaller particles form a large number of minute pockets which are filled with flux and are distributed throughout the core. The outer diameter of the original tube, after cooling and before drawing, may be 0.38 inches and the inner diameter 0.21 inches, and the filled tube may be drawn down to outside diameter 0.093 inches and inner diameter 0.051 inches. Further reduction to 0.068 inches or to 0.048 inches outer diameter or even less may be effected. The flux may be an activated rosin mixture with a plasticizing agent comprising 5 per cent of butyl alcohol. It is stated that in soldering the working end of such wire does not at any time become devoid of either solder or flux.
