Abstract

619,247. Securing wheels on shafts. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Nov. 27, 1946, No. 35190. Convention date, Nov. 27, 1945. [Class 80 (ii)] A flexible drive for transmitting power from a gear 14 to an axle 11 comprises a hollow hub structure 19 rotatably carried by a casing 12 and connected by spokes 15 to the gear rim 14, a spider 23 connected to the axle 11 having spokes 24 arranged in interfitting relation with the gear spokes 15, yieldable cup means between the gear and spider spokes, and means including sealing rings 46 co-operating with the hub structure to form an enclosed space for retaining lubricant for the lubrication of the thrust engaging surfaces 42, 44. The yieldable cup means each comprise opposed cups 34 housing a spring 33 and having exterior ribs 36 arranged to abut the inner ends 37 of bushings 38 carrying the cups. The bushings 38 are provided with ribs 39 fitting grooves formed in the gear spokes 15 and in cap members 30. The sealing rings 46 have flanges 49 fitted within rings 50 carried by the interior of the gear hub structure 16, and flanges 47 are pressed by springs 52 against surfaces 48 on the spider hub. Side plates 53 connected to the gear rim and hub structure complete the spoke space enclosure and a filler hole 55 and plug 56 are provided. The drive is particularly applicable to the driving axle of a locomotive.
