Abstract

618,510. Vibrating apparatus for road construction. WILLIAMS, W. P. (Barnes, R. G.). Feb. 27, 1946. No. 6186. [Class 107] A vibrating screed beam 1 for compacting cementitious surfaces is constructed from a T-shaped angle iron having a tube or rod 4 welded to the upper edge of the vertical flange of the T in order that the vibration should be evenly distributed throughout the length of the screed. The vibrations are set up by eccentrically mounted masses housed on the centre of the beam and rotated by a motor 16. The beam is supported at each end by an inverted U-shaped frame 5 connected by a resilient frame 7 to a supporting member 6 capable of sliding along the form rails 9. The plate 7 permits vertical vibrations but transmits the horizontal unbalanced forces due to the rotating masses to the supports 6 so that during upward and forward motion of the masses the beam may automatically advance. A modified form of screed beam is formed from two L-shaped angles and a vertical plate so forming a composite T beam.
