Abstract
618,460. Radio-navigation. PATRIARCHE, V. H. June 21, 1946, No. 18654. [Class 40 (vii)] In order to assist aircraft to land or take off, a runway 1 is outlined by reflectors 2 for short radio waves and at least two further reflectors, 3 and 5, are arranged along an approach path to the runway at such distances from the end of the runway and at such heights that a line passing through them is at an angle not less than the safe approach angle for the runway; the aircraft carries radar equipment including a two-dimensional scanning arrangement and images of the reflectors are displayed on the screen of the equipment in positions simulating the lay-out of reflectors about the runway as viewed from the craft. Preferably, three reflectors 3, 4 and 5 (Fig. 2) are used to determine the approach path 6, the two outer reflectors 4 and 5 being arranged at equal distances on opposite sides of the path so that by maintaining the image of the inner reflector 3 between that of the outer ones 4 and 5 on the screen, the pilot may direct his craft directly at the runway. Approach path markers may be arranged at each end of the runway and responders may be used instead of reflectors as markers.
