Abstract
618,239. Glass manufacture. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Oct. 30, 1945, No. 28786. Convention date, Nov. 21, 1944. [Class 56] Synthetic jewel material, e.g. for instrument bearings, is produced by heating the following mixture in a vented furnace to raise it in not less than 80 mins. to a temperature of 2732- 2760‹ F.: ammonium alum 400 (parts by weight); boric acid 120; magnesium oxide 40; and either calcium oxide 10 and litharge 20, or beryllium fluoride or oxide 10 and zirconium oxide 10; with or without a trace of metallic colouring agent, e.g. cobalt. The first mixture is suitable where the material is to be drawn into canes for subsequent working into jewels, the second where the jewels are to be made by the drop method directly from the molten mass.
