Abstract

618,092. Thermal switches. APPELBERG, C., (trading as BIRKA REGULATOR, C. APPELBERG). Oct. 18, 1946, No. 31036. Convention date, Oct. 20, 1945. [Class 38 (v)] A temperature regulator for electric heating apparatus has additional contacts controlled by the thermal element for indicating excessive departures from the mean temperature to which the regulator is set. A bellows 20 acts on a spring-controlled plate 2 pivoted on a spring-controlled plate 2 pivoted on a spindle 1 by means of lugs 11 and carrying contacts cooperating with contact-carrying arms 3 ... 5 also mounted by means of lugs on the spindle 1 and controlling, respectively, the circuit to regulating apparatus 18 and signal relays (not shown). The arms 3, 4, are above, and the arm 5 is bent round so as to lie below, the plate 2. For operating-temperature adjustment, a screw 24 co-operates with a U-shaped lever 30 pivoted on the spindle 1 and controlled by a spring 33. In order to maintain a constant temperature difference for the signal contactarms 4, 5, a spring 34 and stud 35 press the arm 3 against lever 30, and a screw 39 engaging the lever 30 bears on the top of arm 5 against the action of a spring which pushes the arm upwards. Normal control of the temperature is effected by the contacts on the plate 2 and arm 3, but, in the event of an excessive rise or fall in temperature, the plate 2 rises to engage the arm 4, or falls to engage the arm 5, to give a signal. Figs. 10, 11 show a further arrangement for simultaneous adjustment of the arms, the arm 5 being superposed over arm 4 and pivoted at 40 to a bracket 41 fixed to the plate 2, which is urged by a spring 23 against the thermal element. The plate 2 carries a screw 43 passing freely through the arm 4 and having a nut 44 on which the arm 5 bears by means of a spring 42. A screw 49 on the arm 4 is urged by the spring 42 against the adjustment lever which is pivoted at 45 and biassed by a spring 33 against the screw 24, a spring 34 urging the lever 3 downwards so that a stud 48 thereon bears on the adjustment lever. In a simpler form, the lever 30 is dispensed with and separate screws provided for adjusting arms 3 ... 5 independently of one another, Figs. 1-4 (not shown).
