617,794. Locating faults; impedance measurements. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd., and BAKER, W. S. GRAFF-. Aug. 28, 1946, No. 25832. [Class 371 A fault in a transmission line 1, 2 is located by feeding into the line oscillations of variable frequency constant amplitude from an oscillator 4 and indicating the impedance of the line, the frequency at which the impedance is a maximum or minimum indicating the length of the line in quarter-wavelengths to the open- or short-circuit. Preferably the impedance is indicated on a cathode-ray tube 7, the Y-plates being fed from a transformer 10 in the line, and the X-plates being fed from a time base 8 which controls the frequency of oscillator 4 so that the cathode-ray trace has a maximum or minimum at the frequency corresponding to the length of the fault. The oscillator 4 is adjusted to have a minimum value corresponding to a wavelength of four times the length of the line, and a maximum value corresponding to a wavelength equal to four times the minimum distance along the line under which a fault can be visually detected.
