Abstract

617,682. Hoists with guided skips; winchregulating apparatus. HOWARD, A. M., and HOWARD, W. Nov. 30, 1945, No. 32472. [Classes 78 (iii) and 78 (v)] A portable skip hoist constructed as an independent unit comprises a single guide rail 1, a saddle 37 adapted to travel along the rail and a skip 31 pivoted to the saddle so as to tip and discharge its contents at the upper limit of travel. In the particular apparatus shown, the rail 1 is of I-section, and the saddle 37 slides on its upper flange and is steadied by rollers 38 bearing against the central web of the rail. The skip is pivoted at 34 to the saddle 38, is attached by means of a bridle 41 to the cable 14 of a winch 21, and is maintained in the normal full-line position shown by means of a shoe 44 which bears against the rail 1. As the skip approaches the upper end of the rail, the shoe passes over a rounded nose-piece 45 and the skip tips about its pivotal connection 34 to discharge its contents. Operation is continuous and automatic; as the skip tips and discharges, the bridle 41 rocks a switch arm 51 to switch-off the winch motor, a spring 52 secured to the bridle is compressed against the top pulley bracket 12 and throws the skip back, the skip then returning down the rail under gravity until it reaches a lower end stop 47. The winch cable is taken round a pulley 28 on a lever 27 pivoted at 25. When the skip comes to rest, the cable slackens, causing lover 27 to fall and apply a brake band 24 to the winch to prevent excessive unwinding of the cable. The lever 27 also operates a switch 29 to restart the winch motor, after a time delay, for the next upward run of the skip. An upper pulley bracket 8 has slots 55 for engaging over the edge of a hopper 54 being filled by the skip. The apparatus may, however, be supported on shear legs attached to studs 63. The lower end of the rail is carried on swivelling road wheols 6, and is slotted at 68 to enable an extension piece to be applied when it is desired to operate the apparatus from a pit below ground level. The Specification also mentions the use of a continuously-running internalcombustion engine in place of an electric motor for driving the winch, the switches 29 and 51 being replaced by clutch-operating members.
