Abstract

617,558. Bed settees. BURGESS, A. F. (Simmons Co.). Oct. 7, 1946, No. 29853. [Class 52 (ii)] In bed settees of the kind comprising a foldable bed bottom of interconnected hinged sections in which the outer section is foldable over an intermediate section and the inner section is movable into a vertical position in a compartment behind the settee back in order to decrease the height of the seat the outer section is foldable on to the main intermediate section while the secondary intermediate section assumes a vertical position at the front of the settee and means are provided for automatically locking the parts in the folded position. The settee comprises a fixed frame 14, 15 provided with legs 16, a bed bottom consisting of sections 3, 4, 5, 6 hinged together at 24, 25, 26 and a front-plate 36 carried by the section 6. The inner section 3 is carried by links 20, 21 by which it is swung into vertical position in the recess 18. In addition to being hinged together sections 4, 5 are linked together by links 50 and sections 5, 6 by links 30, both sets of links having slots to engage pins on the sections. In unfolding from the folded position shown in Fig. 8 to the unfolded position shown in Fig. 1 the cushions 63 are removed and the front of the structure raised and drawn forwardly to withdraw the section 3 from the recess 18 and cause sections 3 and 4 to straighten out. Section 6 is then unfolded which also causes section 5 to align itself with sections 3, 4, 6 and the legs 38, 39 and front board 36 to assume the positions shown in Fig 1. A latch bar 54 is provided pivoted to a lug on section 3 so that the unfolding of the sections causes the latch bar 54 to move longitudinally and by means of a slot, notches and pins at the other end locks the settee in folded position, unlocking taking place when unfolding. The bed bottom is preferably a metal link construction connecting the side members with a flexible fabric cover 62 upon which a mattress 8 is laid.
