seats which can be converted into bed formation.
Among the objects of the present invention, it is aimed to provide an ,improved couch bed, such as a love seat having a main bed section singly affording two adjacent seating spaces and having associated therewith two extension bed sections which b may be extended relative to said main bed section to form a full length double bed formation.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide an upholstered combination including a couch bed having a main bed section in length affording two adjacent seating spaces and two extension bed sections operatively associated with said main bed section and of substantially the same length which may be extended relative to said main bed section to form a full length double bed formation, the upholstered combination consisting of. twomattress sections extending the full length of the main bed section and adapted to be placed upon one another in love seat formation, and a pair of upright pillows, the combined length of which corresponds tothe length of said main bed section which form the back for said main bed section in love seat formation and which comibine with said two mattress sections to cover said several bed sections in extended or double bed formation.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide an improved frame for the intermediate section of a three section double bed formation as a result of which the longitudinal sides of the spring fabric portion may be freely flexible and yet the end portions effectively supported relative to one another, effectively braced in parallel arrangement, and the spring fabric portion maintained taut without encumbering the longitudinal sides of the intermediate bed section beneath the spring fabric portion with rigid side bars or the like.
Itis still another object of the present invention to provide an improved combined seat and bed having a main section singly affording a seat and having associated therewith two extension sections which may be extended relative to said main section to form a full length bed.
These and other features, capabilities and advantages of the invention will appear from one specic embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a front elevation of the combination couch bed in love seat formation;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. l on an enlarged scale;
Fig. 3 is a fragmental section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2 on a smaller scale than that shown in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a fragmental side elevation of the bed couch in double bed formation on a smaller scale than that shown in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a plan View of the bed couch in double A bed formation on the same scale as that shown in Fig. Ll;
Fig. 6 is a fragmental front elevation partly in section on the same scale as that shown in Fig. 2 showing the relation of the several bed sections when nested in one another;
Fig. is a fragmental perspective of the metal frame of the main bed section;
Fig. 8 is a fragmental perspective of the intermediate extension bed section; and
Fig. 9 is a fragmental perspective of the outer extension bed section.
The bed couch constitutes a love seat affording two adjacent seating spaces in nested or closed position and a double bed formation when extended and comprises the main bed section l, an intermediate bed section 2 and an outer extension bed section 3. The main bed section l and intermediate bed section 2 are supported independently, the main bed section on the four rollerless feet 4, the lower ends of the rear metal legs, and the lower face of the horizontally extending flange of the angle iron 2i, and the intermediate bed section on the four casters 5 at the four corners of the intermediate bed section while the outer or extension bed section depends in part for support on the intermediate bed section, it only having casters at its outer corners while its inner corners are provided with pins 'l which ride on the inwardly extending flanges 8 of the end angle irons 9 of the intermediate bed section 2.
The four rollerless feet of the main bed section are part of an outer decorative frame cornposed of wood or the like and suitably covered including two side frame members lil and il which form upwardly extending side arms l2 for the couch bed in love seat formation.
'The main bed section is composed of two L-shaped end members I3 and i4 having the crossbar portions l5 and lli supporting the ends of the spring fabric section Il. The rear upper ends of the crossbar portions i5 and I6 are connected to one another by the longitudinally extending angle iron I8. The lower ends of the downwardly extending portions I9 and 26 are connected to one another by the longitudinally extending angle iron portion 2| to form a. U- shaped member, the upper ends of the portions I9 and 20 being connected to the front end portions of the crossbar portions I5 and I6. To reinforce the corners between the longitudinally extending bar I8 and the cross-bar portions I5 and i6, there are preferably provided the inclined metal straps 22, see Fig. 5, and to reinforce the corners between the longitudinally extending portion 'ZI and the downwardly extending portions I9 and 20, there are preferably provided the inclined metal straps 23, see Fig. 6. 'Ihe portions I9 and 29 are provided with inwardly extending flanges 24 out away at their upper ends to form a clearance for the angle irons 9.
The intermediate bed section 2 preferably includes two inverted U-shaped metal end members 25 having the intermediate angle irons 9 connected to one another by the cross-shaped reinforcing member 2S, and the ends of the spring .fabric 21 connected to the upwardly extending flanges 28 of the angle irons 9. The upwardly extending flanges 28 incline inwardly see particularly Fig. 6 so that the connecting loops of the spring fabric portion 21 may clear the edges of the flanges 24.
The cross-shaped reinforcing member 23 includes two angle irons 29 and 3D with their vertically extending flanges extending downwardly and their abutting faces at the middle 3! secured to one another as for instance by welding. These angle irons 29 and 3i) are bent adjacent the middle 3| to engage one another substantially in alinement with the middle of the spring fabric 21 and are further bent adjacent their ends at 32 and 33 to form a downwardly extending loop see particularly Fig. 3.
The downwardly extending loop is formed so that the spring fabric 21 will be free to be depressed without interfering with any rigid bracing members.
The lower ends of the downwardly extending portions 34 of the end members 25 are provided with the casters 5 already referred to. The front longitudinally extending portion of the spring fabric I1 of the main bed section I preferably extends forwardly beyond the front faces of thedownwardly extending portions I9 and 2U, see Fig. 5. When operatively associated, the rear legs or downwardly extending portions 34 of the intermediate bed section 2 are positioned behind the crossbar 2! and substantially in alinement with the flanges 24, with the spring fabric 21 slidable under the spring fabric I1 and the angle irons 9 sliding in the clearance formed above the shoulders 35 of the flanges 24.
As an additional reinforcement for the spring fabric I1 of the main bed section I, the front projecting edge is preferably provided with a flat flexible metal strap 36 connected by coil springs to the bed sections 31 of the crossbar portions I4 and I5.
The outer extension bed section 3 includes two end members 33 having laterally extending upper bars 39 and downwardly extending leg portions 43 at their front ends to the lower ends of which are secured the casters 6 above referred to.
The front faces of the leg portions 4I] are preferably connected to one another by the front decorative board member 4I and their upper ends by the angle iron 51; the rear ends of the laterally extending bars 39 are preferably provided with the downwardly extending pins 1 already referred to, to ride upon the flanges 8 of the angle bars 9 of the intermediate bed section 2; and the laterally extending bars 39 are further connected to one another by and form the support for, the spring fabric 42 of the extension bed section 3. The inneror rear ends of the laterally extending bars 39 are further connected to one another by the downwardly extending looped bracing member 43, see Fig. 3. The flanges 8 of the angle irons 9 are preferably provided at their ends with upwardly extending limiting stops 52 and 53 for the pins 1 of the outer extension bed section 3. In operative association, the spring fabric 42 is adapted to slide under the spring fabric 21.
Preferably the spring fabrics 21 and 42 of the extension bed members 2 and 3 are provided with cloth covers 44 and 45 respectively.
From the foregoing, it will thus appear that in double bed formation the bars I8, I5 and IS of the main bed section, the bars 9, 9 of the intermediate bed section and the bars 39, 38 and 51 of the outer bed section will form a rigid rectangular outer frame for the spring fabrics I1, 21 and 42 with suilicient clearance beneath the intervening spring fabrics I1, 21 and 42 to permit such spring 'fabrics freely to flex downwardly in use without encountering any objectionable obstacles.
The mattress or upholstered combination forms an important part of the present invention. In the first place, two similarly dimensioned mattress members 4B and 41 are preferably hinged together as shown at 48. In length these mattress members correspond subst/fantially to the distance between the arm portions I2, see Fig. l, so that when folded upon one another, they will snugly cover the entire spring fabric I1 and lap over onto the front board 4I, see Fig. 2, in love seat formation.
In double bed formation on the other hand when the bed sections 2 and 3 have been extended into the position shown in Fig. 4, the mattress portion 46 will lap over onto the rear portion of the spring fabric 21 of the intermediate bed section 2 and the mattress 4'! will extend over the remaining part of the spring fabric 21 and lap over a goodly portion of the spring fabric 42 of the outer bed section 3. In addition to the mattress members 46 and 41, vided two pillow members 49 and 50 which are preferably hinged at their adjacent edges at 5I, see Fig. 2. These pillow members 49 and 5D in combined length extend the full length of the love seat, see Fig. l, and in double bed formation have a width which corresponds to the remaining uncovered portion of the spring fabric 42, that is corresponds in width to the width of the portion of the spring fabric 42, see Fig. 4, not covered by the mattress 41.
When describing the several bed sections, their length is described as the distance between the end members, which length will of course coincide with the width of the double bed section as distinguished from the length of such double bed section from the rear bar I 8 to the front board 4I. In other words, the combined length of the individual bed sections although properly the length of the love seat will become the width of the bed in double bed formation produced F when the bed sections 2 and 3 are extended into the position shown in Fig. 5.
As will clearly appear from Fig. 4, While the length and width of the mattress member 41 are substantially the same as that of the mattress there are also pro- I Til member .46, it is considerably deeper than the mattress member 46, and the mattress members 49 andi!! are preferably at least as deep as the mattress member 41 if not a little deeper.
'Ilo reinforce `the angle iron 2|, the inner faces of the horizontally extending and vertically extending flanges thereof are connected by the angle iron reinforcement 55. Furthermore, some of the other corners not heretofore described in detail are also preferably reinforced, as an instance, the legs 54 are preferably connected to the angle iron i by the reinforcing straps 56; the laterally extending bars .39 are preferably connected to the horizontally extending flange of the angle iron 5l by the reinforcing straps 58; and the vertically extending flanges of the bars 39 are preferably connected to the legs 40 by the reinforcing strapsv59.
It is of course obvious that the main section I may be only long enough to form a single seating space when the sections I, 2 and 3 are telescoped into one another and cooperate with the sections 2 and. 3 in extended position to form a full length single bed or couch without departing from the general spirit vof the invention.
It is obvious that various changes and modications may be made to the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.

A pair of bed sections for a, couch bed, one of said bed sections having angle iron end bars with the horizontally extending webs extending toward one another from the lower ends of the vertically extending webs of said end bars, a spring fabric connected to the upper ends of the vertically extending webs and spaced from said horizontally extending webs, and legs at the ends of said end bars for independently supporting' said bed section, the other bed section having end frames including angle iron end bars with the horizontally extending webs extending away from one another from the upper ends of the vertically extending webs of said end bars, a spring fabric connected to said latter angle iron end bars adjacent the upper ends of their vertically extending Webs, abutments extending downwardly from the rear ends of said latter horizontally extending webs, and legs disposed inwardly of and connected to the inner faces of the front ends of the vertically extending webs of said other bed section to clear the legs of said first mentioned bed section in telescoped position with the abutments slidably mounted on the horizontally extending webs of said first pair of end bars and with the horizontally extending webs of said other bed section slidably mounted between the horizontally extending webs and the spring fabric of said first mentioned bed section.
8. A bed section for a couch bed having end frames including angle irons with one of their webs extending inwardly toward one another from the lower edges of their other and vertically extending webs, downwardly extending angle irons forming legs at the ends of said end frame angle irons with their outer webs connected to the outer faces of said vertically extending webs, a downwardly looped frame including two angle irons secured to one another at adjacent intermediate portions of their vertically extending webs with their other webs extending away from one another and their ends connected to the inwardly extending webs of said end frame angle irons, and a flat spring fabric secured at its ends to the upper edges of the vertically extending webs of end frame angle iron, the inwardly extending Webs of said leg forming angle irons out away at their upper ends to clear the passage formed between said spring fabric and the inwardly extending webs of said end frames.
9. The combination with a main bed section, of an extension bed section slidable under said main bed section into love seat formation and slidable transversely of said bed sections into double bed formation, flat spring fabrics vconnected to said bed sections, parallel horizontally extending angle irons forming a part of said intermediate bed section having upwardly extending flanges to form supporting abutments for the at spring fabric of said intermediate bed section, said main bed section having front legs including flanges extending inwardly toward one another, said flanges having a part cut away to form passages for said angle irons.
