This invention relates to couch beds in general and more especially to couch beds in which one section may serve two functions, in one position r the function of a bed section and in another position the function of the back of a couch.

Among the objects of the present invention, it is aimed to provide a couch bed having two coil spring sections which may at one time aline with one another and have their adjacent longitudinal sides engage or substantially engage one another in double bed formation and which may at another time be disposed substantially at right angle to one another with a longitudinal side of .one section engaging or substantially engaging the front face adjacent a longitudinal side of the other section. v It is still another object of the present invention to provide a couch bed having a fixed horizontally extending coil spring section and a mov-- I able coil spring section operatively associated with said fixed section in one position to aline with the fixed section with their adjacent longitudinal sides engaging orsubstantially engaging one another and in another position to be disposed at right angles or substantially at right angles to the fixed section with the front face of the portion adjacent one longitudinal side engaging or substantially engaging the adjacent longitudinal side of the fixed section.

It is still another object of the present invention to provide a couch bed having a fixed horcoil spring section operatively associated with said fixed section and supporting legs and operating links for guiding said movable bed section into and out of bed forming position, to facilitate in looking said movable section in back forming posiru tion and to guide said supporting legs into supporting position of said movable bed section in double bed formation.

These and otherfeatures, capabilities and advantages of the invention will appear from the 55 subjoined detail description of one specific em- .bodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the bed couch in bed formation with portions of the upholstery removed;

In the embodiment shown, the fixed bed section is illustrated ashaving two couch forming ends I and 2 of any desirable design and in the present instance extending from the floor to and above the sitting level to form 'a'rm rests. To these ends I and 2, there is connected the end portions of the angle iron frame 3. To this angle iron frame 3, there is secured a fiat spring fabric 4 to which are connected the coil springs 5 of n inner spring structure covered by the felt or t e like upholstery 6. The angle iron frame3 extends beyond the front sides of the ends I and- 2 and is preferably provided with rounded corners where so extended beyond the front sides of the ends I and 2. Preferably as here shown, the portion of the frame 3 extending beyond the I front sides of the ends I and 2 has secured thereto a front board 1 extending from one end I to the other end 2. Preferably as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the end board I and felt 6 is then covered by a common covering cloth 8 .for decorative purposes.

This covering material 8 inthe present instance extends from the lower end of the end board to and across the felt 6 to the rear lower end of the frame 3. The rear longitudinal bar 9 of the frame 3 is preferably spaced from the rear sides of the ends I and 2 to accommodate the movable section in back forming position as shown in Fig. 3. Should it be desirable to have the rear sides of the ends I and 2 positioned adjacent to the wall of the room or the like since the ordinary coil spring back section of a; couch is apparently six inches in width, the distance of the bar 8 from the rear sides of the ends I and 2 would be approximately six inches.

Preferably the ends I and 2 are supported on rollers and for this purpose, there are provided the 66 vertically extending angle irons; l0 secured to the inner faces of the ends I and 2 adjacent their front sides. Extending rearwardly from the flanges H of the angle irons l0, there are provided the brackets l2 for the rollers l3. The inner faces of the ends I and 2 adjacent the rear sides thereof are provided with the vertically extending angle irons |4. From the lower ends of the front sides of the flanges l5 of the angle irons I4, there-extend the brackets l6 of the rollers |1. From the rear faces of the flanges l5, there extend the hook formations |8 having the upwardly extending fingers l9 with front inclined cam faces 29, see particularly Fig. 4. r

The hook formations |8 are provided to receive the fixed frame element 2| constituting a leg member of the movable bed section now to be described. The movable bed section whether a disappearing seat section irrespective of its association with a second bed section and its movement relative to a fixed frame, or when truly a movable bed section as here illustrated and its movement relative to the flxedframe element 2| and therefore relative to the fixed bed section constitutes the main part of the present invention. When the movable bed section forms a disappearing seat section irrespective of another bed section, the fixed frame element 2| here shown is of course symbolic of a portion of the fixed frame to which the disappearing seat section is connected.

22 and 23, with the flange 25 at the lower end of the angle iron 24 extending horizontally in alinement with the floor or the like supp rting surface.

At approximately the middle of the flange 25 and extending downwardly therefrom, there is provided the rubber or yieldable button 26 to be pressed into engagement with the supporting floor and frictionally anchor the side bar or angle iron 24 to the floor while operating the movable section into or out of bed formation.

38 and 39 are provided the pivot pins 45 connecting the legs 46 and 41. The legs 46 and 41 are preferably composed of angle iron and the lower ends in supporting position, see Fig. 6, are connected by the longitudinally extending bar 48 in the present instance composed of round stock.

The free ends of the legs 46 and 41 constituting a second leg member for the movable bed section are in the present instance also provided with pivotally connected shoes 49 and 50 to engage the flooror supporting surface, such shoes 49 and 50 being either suitably finished or covered to prevent scratching or otherwise impairing the supporting surface engaged when in supporting position.

To the rear faces of the flanges 5| and 52 of the legs 46 and 41, there are provided suitable rubher or yieldable buttons 53 which see Fig. 3 are intended to extend out sufficiently to engage the adjacent wall and act as bumpers or buffers to protect such wall from injury.

Each of the legs 46 and 41 is connected by two links to the

From the foregoing, see particularly Fig. 6, it will appear that when it is desired to separate the movable bed section from the flxed bed section to provide two separately supported beds, it is only necessary to raise the frame 2| relative to the hooks l8 and at the same time slide it away from the angle irons M to separate the movable bed section into the position shown in Fig. 6 relative to the fixed bed section.

On the other hand, however, when the frame 2| is connected to the angle irons N with the slots 35 and hooks l8 forming a connecting engagement with one another, the frame 2| will of course function as a fixed part of the fixed bed section including the end members 2 and bed frame 3 and the frame 34 and connected links and legs will of course function as a movable bed section relative to the said frame 2| and the fixed bed section. In other words, the frame 2| has a dual function, one as a part of the fixed bedsection to provide an anchor or support for movable parts of the .movable bed section and the other when separated from the angle irons H in the position shown in Fig. 6 as a leg or supporting frame for one side of the movable bed section.

'From the foregoing, it will also appear that when the frame element 2| is fixedly connected to the angle irons l4 and thereby to the fixed bed section and the movable bed section is in bed formation, where the pins 3| are at the rear ends of the slots 35 that illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, it will only be necessary for the attendant to grip the bar 48, raise the same and thereby cause the legs 46 to cooperate with the

In order to prevent the bed moving toward the attendant when so pulling on the bar 48, the attendant may with facility step on the rail or bar'25 to press the friction button 26 into engagement with the fioor or supporting surface to anchor the bed against movement towardthe attendant until the toggle has been broken when the frame 34 will freely swing outwardly and the legs 46 and 41 freely open up into supporting position, that shown in Figs. 2 and 6. It will also be apparent from the foregoing that as a result of this link control and slidable movement along the slots 35, the front end of the upholstered portion mounted on the frame 34 will clear the-rear side of the frame 3 and its upholstered portion both when movinginto and out of bed formation and that the longitudinal adjacent edges of the bed sections will engage or substantially engage as shown in Fig. 2' in bed formation and that in turn in couch formation, the rear longitudinal side of the fixed bed section will engage or substantially engage the front face portion adjacent the longitudinal side of the movable bed section formerly in engagement with or in substantial engagement with a longitudinal side of the fixed bed section.

It is obvious that various changes and mod fi cations may be made to the details of construe tion without departing from the general spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims. I

i claim:

l. A frame, a bed section fixed to said frame, a second bed section, means slidably and movably connecting said second bed section to said frame, said means including a pin secured to said frame and spaced from said first bed section and a slot adjacent the end of said second bed section and links including a movable fulcrum operatively bed section.

2. A frame, a bed section fixed to said frame,

a second bed section, means slidably and movably' connecting said second bed section to said frame, said means including a pin secured to said frame and spaced from said first bed section and a slot adjacent the end of said second bed section and links including a movable fulcrum operatively connecting said second bed section to said frame when actuated alternately to cause said second bed section to be slidably moved from couch back position into bed position and back again, said connecting means facilitating the clearance of said first bed section by said second bed section from one position to the other and determining both final positions of said second bed section in engagementor substantial engagement, with said first bed section.

3. A main frame including end members, a horizontally extending bed frame fixed to said end members, an upholstered inner spring containing formation extending from the upper face of said horizontal frame, va second bed frame, an upholstered inner spring containing formation extending from one face of said second bed frame, slot and pin means slidably and movably.

connecting said second frame to said main frame, and links including a movable fulcrum operatively connecting said second frame to said main frame when actuated alternately to cause said second frame to be slidably moved from couch back position into bed position and back again, said connecting means facilitating the clearance of said first frame and its upholstered formation by said second frame and its upholstered formation when moving from one position to the other and determining both final positions of said second frame in engagement or substantial engagement, of the upholstered formation of said first frame by the upholstered formation of said second frame.

4. A bed section including end members, a horizontally extending bed'frame and an upholstered formation extending upwardly from- .members with the pins at the other ends of said slots in another position, including supporting means pivotally connected to said second bed frame, and links connecting said supporting means with said U-shaped frame and engaging said second frame and thereby cooperating with said second bed frame as a stop in back forming position.

5. A bed sectionincluding end members, a horizontally extending bed frame and an upholstered formation extending upwardly from said bed frame with a space interveningbetween one longitudinal side of said upholstered formation and the alined edges at" one side of said end members, a U-shaped frame removably connected to said end members in said intervening space and having pivot pins secured thereto, a second bed frame having'an upholstered portion extending from one face thereof and slots receiving said pivot pins to facilitate sliding and tilting said second bed frame relative to said end members, supporting means pivotally connected to said second bed frame, links connecting said supporting means with said U-shaped frame and engaging said second frame and thereby cooperating with said second bed frame as a stop in back forming position, and a friction creating device provided on said U-shaped frame to be ,pressed into engagement with the supporting surface of said bed section while'actuating said links.

6. A bed section including end members, a horizontally extending bed frame and an upholstered formation extending upwardly from said bed frame with a space intervening between one longitudinal side of said upholstered formation and the alined edges at one side of said end members, a U-shaped frame connected to said end members in said intervening space and having pivot pins secured thereto, a second bed frame having an upholstered portion extending from one face thereof and slots receiving said pivot pins adjacent the lower ends of said slots in back forming position and to facilitate sliding and tilting saidsecond bed frame relative to said end members with the pins at the other ends of said slots in another position, legs pivotally connected to said second bed frame, a connecting bar connecting said legs to move as a unit, and links connecting said legs to said U-shaped frame and engaging said second frame and thereby cooperating with said second bed frame as a stop in back forming position, said bar serving as a handle for the attendant to actuate said legs and thereby said links to move said second bed frame from couch back position into bed position and back again.

'7. A bed section including and members, a horizontally extending bed frame and an upholstered formation extending upwardly from said bed frame with a space intervening between one longitudinal side of said upholstered formation and the alined edges at one side of said end members, a U-shaped frame connected to said end members in said intervening space and having pivot pins secured thereto, a second bed frame having an upholstered portion extending from one face thereof and slots receiving said pivot pins adjacent the lower ends of said slots in back forming position and to facilitate sliding and tilting said second bed frame relative to said end members with the pins at the other ends of said slots in another position, legs pivotally connected to said second bed frame, links connecting said legs to said U-shaped frame to facilitate actuating said bed frame from couch back position into bed position and back again and engaging said second frame and thereby cooperating with said second bed frame as a stop in back forming position, and bumpers on said legs to protect an adjacent wall when the second bed frame is in couch back position.

8. A bed section including end members, a horizontally extending bed frame and an upholstered formation extending upwardly from said bed frame with a space intervening between one longitudinal side of said upholstered formation and the alined edges at one side of said end members, a U-shaped frame connected to said end members in said intervening space and having pivot pinssecured thereto, a second bed frame having an upholstered portion extending from one face thereof and slots receiving said pivotpins adjacent the lower ends of said slots in back forming position and to facilitate sliding and tilting said second bed frame relative to said end members with the pins at'the other ends of said slots in another position, legs pivotally connected to said second bed frame, links connecting said legs to said U-shaped frame to facilitate actuating said second bed frame from couch back position into bed position and back again and engaging said second frame and thereby cooperating with said second bed frame as a stop in back forming position, and shoes pivotally connected to the free ends of said legs to protect the supporting floor when the legs are in bed frame supporting position.

10. A frame, a fixed bed section secured to said frame, a movable bed section, a separate upholstered portion for each bed section, pivotal pins fixed to said frame in alinement with said fixed bed section, said movable bed section having slots therein for receiving said pins, said pins being spaced from the lateral edge of said fixed bed section a distance corresponding to the thickness of the upholstered portion of said movable bed section to enable said movable bed section to be moved about said pins from a bed forming position where the lateral edges of the upholstered portions are disposed adjacent to one another into a back forming position where the main outer face of the upholstered portion of said movable bed section and said lateral edge of the upholstered portion of the fixed bed section are .disposed adjacent to one another, and toggle forming links connecting the outer end of said movable bed section to said frame and operable to raise said movable bed section relative to said pins preparatory to moving said movable bed section into and out of back forming position either to effect or break the toggle of said toggle forming links.

11. A frame, a fixed bed section secured to said frame, a movable bed section, a separate upholst'ered portion for each bed section, pivotal pins fixed to said frame in alinement with said fixed bed section, said movable bed section having slots therein for receiving said pins, said pins being spaced from the lateral edge of said fixed frame a distance corresponding to the thickness of the upholstered portion of said movable bed section, pivotally connected supporting means adjacent the outer side of said movable bed section, and means including a pair of substantially parallel links connecting said supporting means to said frame, one of the links of said pair forming a movable fulcrum for the supporting means when actuated and the other determining the position of said supporting means in supporting position.

A frame, a fixed bed section secured to said frame, a movable bed section, a separate upholstered portion for each bed section, pivotal pins fixed to said frame in alinement with said fixed bed section, said movable bed section having slots therein receivin'g said pins, said pins being spaced from the lateral edge of said fixed frame a distance corresponding to the thickness of the upholstered portion of said movable bed section to lateral edges of the upholstered portions are disposed adjacent to one another into a back forming position where the main outer face of the upholstered portion of said movable bed section and said lateral edge of the upholstered portion of the fixed bed section are disposed adjacent to one another, pivotally connected supporting means adjacent the outer side of said movable bed section, and means inbluding a pair of links connecting said supporting means to said frame, the combined length of a link and the portionbetween the pivotal connection of the link with said supporting means and the movable bed section being effective to raise the movable bed section relative to said pivotal pins to space it from the fixed bed section to facilitate positioning the upholstered portion of the movable bed section in the space so formed. t

13. A frame, a fixed bed section secured to said frame, a movable bed section, a separate upholstered portion for each bed section, pivotal pins fixed to said frame in alinement with said fixed bed section, said movable bed section having slots therein receiving said pins, said pins being spaced from the lateral edge of said fixed frame a distance corresponding to the thickness of the upholstered portion of said movable bed section, pivotallyconnected supporting means adjacent the outer side .of said movable bed section, and meaps including a pair of links connecting said supporting means to said frame, the combined length of a link and the portion between the pivotal connection of the link with said supporting means and the movable bed section being effective'when extended to raise the movable bed section relative to said pivotal pins to space it from the fixed bed section to facilitate positioning the upholsteredportion of the movable bed section in the space so formed, said latter link and the said portion of said supporting means forming a toggle link which may be swung beyondits dead center when the movable bed section is in back forming position as an anchor.

14. A fixed bedsection including a frame having vertically extending hooks, a separate col- .lapsible bed section comprising a supporting frame having slots therein to receive said hooks,

a second frame slidably connected to said supporting frame, supports pivotally connected to said second frame, and links connecting said supports to said supporting frame to cooperate with said supporting frame and supports to support said collapsible bed section as abed separate from said fixed bed section when desired.

15. A frame including a seat portion, a back forming section slidably connected to said frame, and toggle forming links connectingsaid back forming section to said frame, said links effecting an upward movement of,s aid back forming section relative-to said frame when passing dead center whereby the weight of said back forming section will cooperate with said links after having passed dead center to descend and thereby to anchor said back forming section against accidental displacement.

16. A frame, a seat section connected to said frame, a back forming section, pivotal pins on said frame, said back forming section having slots receiving said pins, supporting means pivotally connected to said back forming section to be extended in bed forming position of said back forming section, and a pair of links connecting said supporting means to said frame, one of said links and said supporting means forming a toggle to be moved about its dead center in back forming position to serve as an anchor, the other of said links forming a movable fulcrum for said supporting means when actuated.

A fixed upright, va seat forming section, a slidable connection between said upright and said section, and toggle forming links connecting said upright with said section and operable to pass dead center when said seat forming section is in substantial alinement with said upright, the portion of said links adjacent their pivotal connection in one position resting against said section to.maintain said section in upright position and the lower part of said section in upright position overhanging and positioned to en-' gage said upright to cooperate with said toggle forming links to maintain said section in upright position. v

19. A fixed upright, a seat forming section,

a pin and slot connection between said upright and said section, and toggle forming links connecting said upright with said section and .operable to pass dead center when said section is folded-upwardly, the slot of said connection exarable to pass'dead center -when saidsection is folded upwardly, the slot of said connection being substantially vertical in such upwardly folded position to cause said section to rise when approachlng the dead .oenter of said toggle forming links and enable itfagain to descend after being folded upwardly and after so having'passed the dead center of said toggle forming, links, and in turn to enable said section again to rise out of locking position to break the toggle lock preparatory to swinging said section into seat formation.

21. An upright, a disappearing seat forming section, a pin and slot connection between said upright and said section, and toggle forming links connecting said upright. with said section and operable to pass dead center when said back forming section is in substantial alinement with said upright, the portion of said links adjacent their pivotal connection in one position resting against said section to maintain said section in upright position and the lower part of said sec-' tion in upright position overhanging and positioned to engage said upright to cooperate with said toggle forming'links to maintain said section in upright position.

22. An upright, an interchangeable back and bed forming section, a slidable connection between said upright and said section, a pair of toggle forming links connecting said upright with said section, one of said toggle forming links forming a supporting leg for said section in bed forming position, and a third link connecting 10 said upright to said leg forming link to cooperate with said toggle links and upright to anchor said leg in leg forming position.

23. A frame, a fixed bed section secured to said frame, a movable bed section; a separate upholstered portion for each bed section, pivotal pins fixed to said frame in alinement with said fixed bed section, said movable bed section having slots therein for receiving said pins, said .pins being spaced from the lateral edge of said fixed bed section a distance corresponding to the thickness of the upholstered portion of said movable bed section to enable said movable bed section to be moved about said pins from a bed forming position where the lateral edges of the upholstered portions are disposed adjacent to one another into a back forming position where the main outer face of the upholstered portion of said movable bed section and said lateral edge of the upholstered portion of the fixed bed section are disposed adjacent to one another, supporting means pivotally connected to the outer side of said movable bed section, and a pair of substantially parallel links connecting said supporting means with said frame, one link of each pair serving as a movable fulcrum for said supporting means when actuated and the other link of each pair serving to determine the position of said supporting means in supported position.

24. A fixed bed section including a frame, a leg member, means for removably connecting said leg member to said fixed bed section, a

collapsible bed section, means slidably connecting said collapsible bed section to said leg member, a second leg member pivotally connected to said collapsible bed section, and a link pivotally connecting said second leg member to said first leg member.

In an article of furniture, a seat unit having the length of an adult individual for enabling support in a reclining position of sleep, of a back unit coextensive with said seat unit for detachable association therewith to serve as a complement thereof in supporting the back of an individual seated on said seat unit, standards for elevating said seat and back units from the fioor for an equal distance when both are used as beds, and inter-engaging means on adjacent standards of said seat and back units for detachably connecting said back and seat units for use as a sofa couch or as separable twin beds, said back unit being slidably connected to its standards that are disposed adjacent said seat unit for angular displacement relative thereto to define a couch assembly therewith.
