Abstract

The softening point of poly-2-vinyl or poly-4-vinyl-dibenzofuran is raised by partial or complete hydrogenation, e.g. in solution in dioxan in the presence of activated Raney nickel catalyst. The product may be oriented and formed into films, threads, tubes, ribbons and rods. It may be dissolved in dioxan, benzene, toluene, xylene, chlorobenzene, ethylene dichloride, dichloroethylene, trichloroethylene or tetrachlorethane and applied to paper, glass fabric, ethyl cellulose, regenerated cellulose, silk, rayon and nylon to form electric insulation and dielectrics, and compounded with asbestos, quartz, talc, mica, titanium, zinc or magnesium oxides, wood flour, a -cellulose, dyes, plasticizers and lubricants to form moulding compositions.
