Abstract

319,591. Du Pont de Nemours & Co., E. I., (Assignees of Lawson, W. E., and Werntz, J. H.). Sept. 22, 1928, [Convention date]. The alpha polymer of vinyl chloride free from the beta polymer is produced by heating vinyl chloride in the presence of a catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide, ozone, and barium peroxide to a temperature of more than 80‹ C. and preferably in the form of a solution in an inert organic solvent, and continuing the heating until the desired degree of conversion is obtained. The product may be used for making solid articles or as an ingredient in coating-compositions as it is compatible with drying oils and is soluble in many solvents. The polymerization is effected preferably at 90-120‹ C. in the presence of solvents in sealed tubes. In the examples the polymerization is effected with (1) ethylene dichloride (solvent) and benzoyl peroxide; (2) absolute methanol which has been treated with ozone for two hours; (3) chlorbenzene and benzoyl peroxide; (4) ethyl acetate and benzoyl peroxide. Other solvents such as acetone, benzene and toluene may be used. Specification 319,597 is reffered to.
