Abstract

617,272. Tubular heat-exchange elements. SAUNDERS & TAYLOR, Ltd., and SAUNDERS, J. N. June 7,1946, No. 17315. [Class 64(iii)] Relates to a heat exchanger unit for immersion in the cylinder of a water heating system comprising a single-hole mounting header leading to concentric inner and outer tubes g, f providing a flow- and-return passage through and around the inner tube g, and having inlet and outlet sockets a<1>, a<2> for pipe connections. According to the invention the unit is made with the effective cross-sectional area of the annular space between the tubes equal to the bore of the piping connected to a socket. As shown a cast union a adapted to be screwed in the top of a hot water cylinder has a central tube c surrounded by an annular passage d with inner end d<1> sloping upwardly to side socket a<2>, which receives the outlet pipe. An inclined hole e forming a combined air-lock and air-vent leads from the side socket a<2> to the central passage in the tube c. A hole e<2> connects the air-vent e to the annular passage d. Inner and outer tubes g, f are fixed to the union a, the outer tube being closed by a plate f<1> and the inner tube which is spaced from the outer tube by spacing members g<1> communicates with the annular space A between the tubes through holes g<2>. In use hot water led in through a pipe connected to the upper socket a<1> passes down the central tube g then along the annular passages h, d and returns to the boiler through a pipe connected to the side socket a<2>, heating the water in the cylinder by conduction through the wall of the tube f. A helical wire may be inserted in the annular passage between the tubes to increase the effective length of the passage and reduce the cross-section to that of the circuit to which the device is connected. As shown the side sockets are adapted to receive a 1 inch bore tube and tubes g and f have external and internal diameters respectively of 1 3/4 ins. and 2 ins.
