Abstract

[Class 135] [Also in Group XXXIV] A rotary cut-off valve, having conduits 3, 4 and 5 leading respectively to both front wheel brakes and the left- and right-hand rear wheel brakes is inserted after the master cylinder 2 of an automobile fluid-pressure braking system in order to provide differential operation of the individual wheel brakes. The rotary valve, which in Fig. 1 is of cylindrical form, is held, after rotation by hand lever 10, in any of the selected positions S, P or R by the friction between the end wall 7 and the end face of the valve, when this is under the action of the braking pressure, and is returned automatically to its normal non-restricting position by the combined torsion and compression spring 9 when the brakes are released. In a modified form of valve, Fig. 4, the valve and its seat are of frusto-conical shape and the outlet passages 22 are drilled through the inclined faces which also provide the necessary friction locking effect.
