Abstract

1,193,984. Differential braking arrangements. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. 20 Aug., 1968 [5 Sept., 1967], No. 40459/67. Heading B7H. [Also in Division F2] The invention provides a system for applying the brakes selectively to the wheels on one or other side of a vehicle, to assist in turning the vehicle. As shown, a hand lever 39 pivoted so as to operate in a plane transverse to the length of the vehicle is connected to an arm 38 which actuates a driver's brake-applying valve 10 (see Division F2) located between a master cylinder 34 and wheel brake cylinders 37 on opposite sides of the vehicle. In operation, with the arm 38 in its central position, as shown, liquid under pressure can pass from the master cylinder through both plugs 12 so that all the brakes on both sides may be applied simultaneously. If, however, before the master cylinder 34 is operated, the hand lever is moved, e.g. to the right, only the brakes on the right-hand side will be operated. When the master cylinder is actuated, and while the appropriate brakes are being applied, the ports and passages in valve 10 are such that arm 38 (and hence lever 39) is restored automatically to its central position. When the brakes are released the valve parts in valve 10 are symmetrically disposed, so that future actuations of the master cylinder will result in all brakes on both sides being applied, unless the hand lever 39 has been set for one-sided operation.
