Abstract
616,842. Photographic cameras. WHITAKER, H. S., and MITCHELL, S. S. C. Aug. 8, 1946, No. 23526. [Class 98 (i)] An uninterrupted image of the interior surface of a pipe or tube is made by producing a relative longitudinal and rotational movement between such surface and an optical system so as to scan the surface progressively and to transfer the image to a photographic film arranged in the form of a cylinder or tube. As used for examination of a Browning Aircraft machine gun barrel the optical system consists of a tube 1, Fig. 1, thirty-six inches long and of a diameter to fit into the barrel, provided with a pea lamp 4 and scanning prism 2 at one end and a transferring prism 3 masked by a semicylindrical mask 6 with a helical slot 7 at the other end and lenses 5 between; and this assembly is attached by screw thread 18 to a lead screw 19, Fig. 2, which is revolved by chain driven sprocket 22 with a key 23 acting in a longitudinal slot in the lead screw which is itself in screw thread engagement with flanged nut 20 and so driven in helix form into the gun barrel (not shown). The lamp 4 is lit with the aid of contacts in the lead screw and the rays from the helical slot 7 are caused to act on a strip of film arranged in the form of a tube of diameter of the gun barrel and contained in a cassette which is held in alignment with the barrel and at the further end of it.
