Abstract
616,771. Thrust bearings. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., HASSLER, E. H. H., and WILLIS, H. Sept. 13, 1946, No. 27521. [Class 12 (i)] In a thrust bearing for a vertical shaft 1 wherein an annular thrust collar 6 is immersed in an annular oil bath surrounding the shaft, one or more segment-shaped stationary oil chambers are provided inside the thrust face and extending at least halfway round the shaft, the chambers having distributed outlet holes to direct cool oil under pressure against the thrust face 6c. The oil bath is formed by the casing 3 and a sleeve 4 whilst the chambers are formed between sleeve 4 and a jacket 5. Sleeve 4 has a truncated conical base 4a secured to the casing 3 and also baffles 4b, 4c, the latter forming with the top of jacket 5 the oil outlets. The stationary oil level is indicated at 20. The bearing shown consists of thrust pads 9 engaging the collar 6 and radial pads 13 supported by ring 3b of the casing 3. Oil leaving the thrust face 6c is divided into two streams, one passing up between pads 13 and through ports 14 in ring 3b and the other being deflected by the surface 17 of ring 3b and through holes 10b in the support ring 10. The lead-in pipes 16 are brought in above the thrust face 6c and have vents 16a near the top to prevent reverse syphon action. Surplus oil flows over weirs 11 to the fall pipes 12. Recirculated oil may be fed through inlets 18 to additional chambers which extend a quarterway round the shaft. The inner surface of the collar 6 is reversely tapered to prevent oil flowing over sleeve 4 and also to prevent air being drawn down into the oil. The shaft carries an oil-thrower ring 1c overlapping the collar 2a of an oil tray 2.
