Abstract
Filaments, fibres, films and other articles made of acrylonitrile polymer are dyed in an aqueous bath containing a vat dyestuff, an alkali, an aromatic hydroxy compound and a reducing agent, and the leuco vat dyestuff is subsequently oxidized on the article. Suitable aromatic hydroxy compounds are the cresols, catechol, resorcinol, hydroquinone, pyrogallol, dihydroxytoluenes, and a - and b -naphthol. In an example, dry-spun polyacrylonitrile yarn is immersed in a bath containing water, Durindone Violet B400, sodium carbonate, sodium hydrosulphite and b -naphthol, rinsed and oxidized in aqueous hydrogen peroxide. Specifications 573,270 and 579,887 are referred to.
