Abstract

616,364. Directive radio systems. BROWN, R. H. June 20, 1947, No. 15216/46. [Class 40 (vii)] In order to prevent a responder beacon from being triggered by the side lobes radiated by the directional aerial of an interrogating transmitter, an additional omnidirectional transmission is radiated by the interrogator such that the omnidirectional transmission produces a signal of greater amplitude than the directional transmission at the responder except when the main lobe of the directional aerial is pointed at the responder. The directional aerial periodically transmits a pair A, B of pulses having a predetermined time spacing suitable to trigger the responder and the omnidirectional aerial periodically transmits a single pulse C timed to occur midway between the pulses A. and B. Automatic gain control means is provided at the responder to fix a threshold level at the level of each received pulse, which level decays slowly with time. Thus, when pulses A and B are of greater amplitude than pulse C, A and B only are passed and the responder is operated. However, when pulse C has the greater amplitude only pulses A and C are passed, the time spacing of which differs from the predetermined value, and the responder is not operated.
