Abstract

An article simulating an iris for incorporation into an artificial eye is made by photographing a natural iris and producing a relief image thereof in a layer of gelatine emulsion in which a white or light coloured pigment is dispersed and which is provided with a dark backing substance. The pigment has the effect of scattering incident light in proportion to the thickness of the relief image; in the case of white pigments used with a black backing the scattered light is predominantly blue. Irides exhibiting other colours may be produced by modifications concerning the colour of the pigment or the dark backing substance or by super-imposition of a coloured varnish layer. It has been found that the prints of irides can be incorporated in artificial eyes made by compression moulding from synthetic plastic materials, particularly the acrylic ester plastics.
