Abstract

A process for steaming hydrophilic cellulose textiles, i.e. of regenerated cellulose, comprises treating the textiles under pressure in an autoclave with dry saturated steam in the absence of oxygen. The process is applicable equally to yarn in the form of cakes, threads and fabrics. A vacuum should be produced in the receptacle in which the treatment is to be carried out before admitting the steam, which should be degassed. An inert gas may be employed to fill the autoclave instead of evacuating it. The process reduces the swelling index (defined in the Specification together with a test for its determination) from the initial figure of between 80 and 150 per cent to about 40 per cent, without deterioration of the cellulose as shown by viscosity measurements. In an example, high tenacity viscose rayon for sewing thread is treated in an autoclave which is evacuated before admission of steam. Dry steam at 2 kg/cm.2 pressure is admitted for 2 hours. The degree of polymerization remains at 350 and the swelling index drops from 80 to 55. In a further example, a roll of cloth fabric of regenerated cellulose artificial staple fibre is placed in an autoclave filled with nitrogen. Dry steam at 1.8 kg/cm.2 is allowed to act upon it for 2 1/2 hours. Specification 201,526, [Class 2 (ii)], is referred to.
