Abstract

614,605. Boring earth. FERGUSON, Inc., H. July 18, 1946, No. 21501. Convention date, Aug. 23, 1945. [Class 85] A post-hole boring attachment for a tractor comprises a frame pivoted to the tractor for vertical movement and having a groundengaging part, a boring member capable of vertical movement relative to the frame, and means for lowering the parts so that the frame engages the ground before the boring element. In Figs. 1 and 4, links 19, universally pivoted to a tractor T, are raised and lowered through links 21 and cranks 22 rocked, under control of a lever 24, by a hydraulic ram as in Specification 470,069, links 19 acting through rods 48 to rock an A-frame 42 pivoted to legs 28 of a tripod; the legs 28 are pivoted to the tractor and at their upper ends are fixed to a head frame 30 to which the third leg 29, adapted to engage the ground, is connected freely so as to take a vertical position. The auger 26 is driven from a power take-off shaft 25 through a telescopic shaft 60 and gearing in a housing 36 in which the auger is journalled; a square guide-rod 35, carried by the housing 36, is slidable in a square guide 38 forming a torqueresisting connection, the guide 38 being pivoted at 39 in a frame 40 pivoted at right angles to the pivot 39, whereby the boring assembly automatically takes a vertical position. A cable 53 passes over pulleys 54, 55, on the A- frame 42 and head frame 30 to anchorages on the housing 36; thereby, on lowering the A- frame, the boring assembly and tripod descend together until the leg 29 contacts the ground, the boring assembly afterwards descending alone. A projection 58 slidably co-operates with a bracket 57 on the housing 36 to prevent the leg 29 fouling the auger. Further, a telescopic arm 63 may connect the A-frame 42 and housing 36 to prevent rotation of the latter. Descent of the auger may be limited by inserting a pin in one of several holes 70 in the guide rod 35. In another form, Fig. 5, the A-frame is omitted, and the tripod leg 129 and auger assembly have universal mounting through balls 134, 138, to permit them to assume a vertical position ; telescopic members 71 are pivoted to the tractor and to a centrally pivoted rod on the housing 36, and are held by hooks 73 to a transverse member 72 connecting the ends of the links 19, whereby movement of the latter raises or lowers the boring assembly &c.
