Abstract
614,397. Helically-wound tubular containers. STUART, K. June 14, 1945, No. 15140. [Classes 18 and 66] [Also in Group XXVIII] Tubular containers are formed by helically winding paper or like fibrous material to form the body 30, Fig. 4, which has a continuous thermoplastic lining 33, e.g. of rubber hydrochloride, a closure 34, also with such a lining 36 being applied to one end, and contacting portions of the linings bonded by heat and pressure, as by using a heated iron. The liner is preferably wound first on a mandrel 18, Fig. 5, as an overlapping strip 38 which is fused into a smooth continuous tube by a heated roller 41 under pressure due to its weight and to spring action at 44 during winding but raised as by a centrifugal switch 40 and solenoid 40', &c., when the mandrel strops rotating. Strips of paper or fibre-board are then helically wound and adhesively secured to build the required wall thickness and the composite tube thus formed is cut into lengths. After filling, the top closure is applied and also heatsealed. C-section metal rim strips 28, 29 are then clenched on. In a modification the ends of the body of the container are flanged outwardly to receive flat discs, the liner being heat-sealed and C-section metal strips clenched on.
