a claim. (ci. zzo- 14) I This invention relates to a package and to a method of making a package.
One object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved construction of package adapted to be closed and sealed inca novel manner to effectively seal the contents of the package. Y A further object of the invention is to provide a novelv and improved lined package in which y provision is madefor closing and sealing the 10 mouth of the liner in a novel and improved manner.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel method of making a closed and sealed package `by which the mouth of the package may be closed and sealed in a novel, eflicient andv practical manner.
With theseobjects in view, and such others as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the package and in the method of making the package hereinafter described and particularly defined in the claims at the endA of this specification. I
In the drawing illustrating the preferred embodiments of Lthe invention, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a lined package embodying the present invention in a condition ready to be iilled and 4subsequently closed; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the mouth portion'of a lined package illustrating -another embodiment'of the inventiom' Fig. 3 is va perspective illustrating the package shown in Fig. 2 after 'the mouth of the lining has been closed and sealed; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the package in the'condition shown in Fig. 3; Fig. 5
is a plan view of the package with the upstanding closed and sealed mouth of the lining folded down preparatory tol closing the iiaps of the package itself; Fig..6 is a plan view illustrating the top of the package after the flaps have been closed;
and Fig. 7 is a perspective of the completely filled,
I 5 contacting surfaces of the ,folded flaps of the mouthof the liner in the attempt to provide.
a tight seal for the mouth of the liner. The
strength of the'paraiiin seal thus produced, however, is not as great as is desirable, and, accord- 55 ingly, one of the aims of the present invention is to provide a package having a similarly parafned paper liner in which the mouth of the liner is closed and'sealed in a novel manner such as to provide a superior and much stronger seal than has heretofore been possible to produce with the hot sealing methods heretofore used.
acca-,42o
The present invention, therefore, contemplates in its broader aspects a moisture-proof package or bag which may take the form of a paper bag or a liner for a carton, 'and in which the moisture-v proof coating does not extend to the mouth of the bag but terminates a suiiicient, distance therefrom to provide an uncoated portion of the paper capable of being utilized to provide a paper to paper l contact adapted to be sealed by glue or other adhesive and thereby provide a moisture-proof package or bag having its mouth sealed by a superior and much stronger seal. It is preferred to. close the mouth of the package or bag by folding outwardly the opposite end portions of the mouth of the package or bag to enable a continuous seal from one side of the bag to the other to be produced, and thereafter the mouth of the' bag may be folded in any desired manner to form the completed package. In its preferred form the invention is embodied in a paraiiin lined package, and provision is made in accordance with the present method for removing a band of paraffin around the mouth of the liner, preferably from either the inside or from both the inside and outside of the mouth thereof, -to thereby provide an exposed uncoated sealing portion, enabling the same to be broughtinto contact and glued or otherwise adhesively affixed together. Thereafter the sealed mouth portion of the liner may be folded down within the outer package and the iiaps of the latter may be closed and sealed in any usual or preferred manner.
Referring now to the drawing, I0 represents a package or carton which may be made in any usual or preferred manner and is herein shown as provided with bottom flaps I2. and top flaps Il. The bottom flaps i2 may be closed and sealed in any suitable bottom sealing machine or in any other suitable manner. 'I'he carton or package I0 is in accordance with the present invention provided with a moisture-proof liner or bag I8 within the same, and the mouth of which is arranged to project above the top of the opened package in the manner illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. 'I'he mouth portion of the liner i6 is provided with an uncoated band or strip 20 extending around the mouth of the bag, preferably around the marginal portion of the mouth of the bag," as
ture=proof liner niet compriee o oi mramned peper end the ce bond y conveniently be formed by removing` the potremo cnet from either the inner marginal surface o the mouth of the liner, ne illustrated in i, or from botte the linner end outer ecce, ae iliuetreted in Fie. iii. desired during the operation ci coating: the peper with paramn, onpuncoeted portion may be left to fo the scalini; bend otter-the beg or liner is formed., in eccordonoe with the usuel practice of monufectiuing porain conter?. peper begs euch es heretofore have been es liners, the side seams i@ o the be@ ere formed by oren lapping the paramn coated morginoi edge por .tiene of the sheet and heat eenling the come, whereby to produce e bog herring ite body portion entirely covered with comme so tiret moet ein i iective resistance is offered to the passege oi mois ture through the body of the bee.
The package with the iiner orrenged as shown in Figs, i and 2-is then. in o condition ior *filling and closing', and the iling operation mey be performed by hand or:` by any suitable filling mechanism, and after the liner has been filled, provision is made for closing the mouth portion of the liner in such o manner es to bring together the uncoated portions o the mouth ci the liner, or the sealing ,bend 2o, in order to permit the mouth of the liner or bag to be edhe siveiy aiilxed together by glue or by other suitable adhesive and to provide u superior and strong seal for the same. As illustrated in Mge. 3 'und 4, the opposite end portions of 'thel liner may be folded outwardly toeiect the closing of the mouth of the liner, and 4prior to the actual closing ci the same, those portions of the uncoated sealing strip which are to be brought'into contact may and preferably will be provided with adhesive, so that when the folding operation is completed and thel contacting faces of the sealing strip pressed together, a. desirable and strong seal is provided errtending entirely across the mouth of the bag or After the bag has thus been filled, closed and sealed, the projecting portion of the mouth of the liner may and preferablywili be folded down into the position shown in Fig. o, after which the 'troneo t embodied in other fo wi the scope ci the ioilowing claims.
