614,076. Condensers. PHILIPS LAMPS, Ltd. July 4, 1946, No. 20011. Convention date, July 15, 1942. [Class 37] An electric condenser is formed from a single piece of insulating material 1 which has notches 2 separated by ribs 3 provided on each side with a conductive coating 8, the coatings on both sides of each rib being electrically connected to each other by coatings on the portions 5. In one example Fig. 1, a cylindrical piece 1 of quartz or ceramic material is provided with annular or partannular notches 2, preferably by grinding, and metal coatings applied e.g. by immersing the cylinder with its axis horizontal in a metal bath to such extent that the portions 4 remain free of metal, and rotating the cylinder in this position about its axis. Conductors 6, 7 soldered or spot-welded in place may be used to connect alternate rib electrodes. In a second example (Fig. 2, not shown) a rectangular block of insulating material has notches cut or formed in it to provide a number of rectangularshaped ribs, each connected to an unnotched part below one edge only. Both sides and three edges of each rib are coated with metal and alternate ribs are connected either by conductors. as in Fig. 1, or by means of coatings applied on the unnotched part. In a further example (Fig. 3, not shown) the notches and ribs have the shape of a segment of a circle, the notches preferably being formed by means of a grinding disc, forced during grinding into the top surface of an insulating block. The metal coatings may be covered with a protecting layer of quartz, varnish, or enamel, and are preferably of precious metal.
