Abstract
596,972. Asymmetrically-conducting resistances. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. July 21, 1944, No. 14012. Convention date, July 16, 1943. [Class 37] In a rectifier element a thin metal disc 12 has a layer of selenium 14 on its periphery and counter-electrode alloy 16 on the selenium, a contact arm 24 of a contactor 22 bearing against the alloy. A number of such units may be mounted in series as shown in Fig. 1 on a shaft 18 of insulating material or having an insulating sleeve 20, each contactor 22 or 23 being electrically connected with the next element, and spaced from the disc whose periphery it contacts by an insulating washer 28. 26 is a connecting tab, and 30, 31 are metal washers, the former (30) having an extension forming a second connecting tab. A full-wave rectifier may be formed by reversing the position of two of the elements shown in Fig. 1, and providing each one with a lug 26 (see Fig. 3, not shown). In modifications (Figs. 4, 5 and 6, not shown), the selenium layer on a single disc may be divided into two separate equal sections to form a pair of rectifier elements in parallel, or into several sections of differing currentcarrying capacities.
