Abstract
613,718. Optical glass. CORNING GLASS WORKS. June 27, 1946, No. 19277. Convention date, Sept. 4, 1945. Drawings to Specification. [Class 56] A transparent optical glass having a refractive index (nD) of at least 1.60 and a dispersive index (V) greater than 202-100 nD and 111.4-46.6 nD contains over 20 per cent, but not over 80 per cent, of CdO and at least 2 per cent of SiO 2 . Preferred ranges are CdO 20-80 per cent weight; SiO 2 2-50; Al 2 O 3 0-30 (preferably at least 2); and B 2 O 3 0-40 (preferably 2-15). The glass may also contain PbO and BaO (not more .than about 55 per cent) and alkali metal oxides (not more than about 20 per cent). ZrO 2 may also be present in small amounts, also substances such as BeO, ZnO and TiO 2 . The Al 2 O 3 may be omitted if more than about 70 per cent of CdO is present, the B 2 O 3 may be omitted if less than about 70 per cent of CdO is present, and the Al 2 O 3 and B 2 O 3 may be omitted if substantial amounts of additional oxides such as PbO and alkali metal oxides are present. In particular examples, nD ranges from 1.6195 to 1.8883 and V from 50 to 25.
