[Class 42(i)] [Also in Group XXXV] In apparatus for seam-welding thermoplastic sheet material, the work is moved in relation to roller electrodes supplied with pulses of high frequency electrical energy of predetermined energy content from a generator having an oscillatory circuit embodying a valve arranged to oscillate for a predetermined limited period of time after the commencement of oscillation, and successive pulses are initiated at a repetition frequency dependent on the speed of the work relative to the electrodes. The amount of heat supplied to a seam is thus dependent only on its length, and is independent of variations in the speed of feed. A commutator driven by the roller electrodes, feed rollers or equivalent means at a speed proportional to the rate of feed of the material acts as a switch to initiate the pulses of energy (see Group XXXV). Means are provided for adjusting the pulse duration according to the requirements of the welding operation.
