613,324. Step ladders. NOEL, H. June 19, 1946, No. 18344. [Class 20(ii)] Relates to folding step ladders of the type wherein a pivoted strut member is variable in length to compensate for differences in floor level, and is characterized by the pivoted strut member being connected to a member, e.g. a swivel plate 10, pivoted to an upper tread or the platform 3 about an axis substantially at right angles to the tread or platform, and means for limiting the rotary movement of the pivoted member, e.g. arcuate slots 11 therein engaging pins 12 on the platform 3. The alteration in length of the pivoted strut member may be achieved by forming it from tubes 6, 5, 4 respectively telescoping into one another and held by clamping screws 7, the tubes being suitably braced together, or by pivoting the ends of the tubes 4 through links 17 to lower tubes 16 which may be folded back and held by clips 18, and which may be held in the extended position by e.g. sliding sleeves 19. The outward movement of the strut member may be limited by stops on the plate 10, and its position may be located by spring-loaded plungers engaging detents in lugs formed on the strut members. The Provisional Specification mentions that the pivoted strut members may comprise relatively sliding frames.
