613,146. Can openers. LINDBERG, A. W. April 1, 1946, No. 10061. A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, Oct. 7, 1946. [Class 66] A can opener comprises two levers, 1, 2, articulately connected together to form long and short arms, upon the short arm 7 on one of which is carried a knife blade 12, and upon the short arm 6 of the other is mounted a guide wheel 20 adapted to bear against the joint between the lid of the can and the wall, a toothed feed wheel 21 and an arm 23 for actuating the same by means of a pawl 26 and ratchet wheel 22. The knife blade 12 projects from a cupped disc 11 which is mounted upon a bolt 15, a shaped portion of which fits within oblong holes in the disc and arm 7 to prevent relative rotation. A knob 18 threaded upon the bolt 15 holds the disc 11 in place and also serves to receive pressure to pierce the knife blade 12 into the lid of the can. Lever 2 having the short arm 7 is interposed between two similar plane members forming the lever 1, spaced apart by a wooden insert 8 and a distance piece 10 at the pivot, 3. Upon a pivot 19 between said plane members are mounted the guide wheel 20, toothed feed wheel 21 and ratchet wheel 22, which may be rigidly joined together or made in one piece and rotate as a unit. The actuating arm 23, bent from a single piece of sheet iron is also mounted upon the pivot 19 outside the arm 6 and carries the pawl 26 which is held in engagement with the ratchet wheel 22 by a spring 27. In use, the joint between the lid and the wall of the can is gripped between the disc 11 and the guide and feed wheels 20, 21, Fig. 6, rotation of which causes the tin to rotate and knife blade 12 to cut the lid. In a modification, Fig. 3, a single wheel 211 replaces the feed and ratchet wheels, and the guide wheel is replaced by a rounded portion 42<1> of the arm 231. The arm 7 is bent forward (away from the plane of the paper) and the knife blade 12 projects from a sector shaped ridge 40 turned up from a plane disc 11<1>. The disc 11<1> has a horse shoe shaped hole 131 and the bolt 151 is correspondingly shaped to prevent relative rotation. In a further modification of the first construction, Fig. 5, a rotary ring 50 is mounted upon the disc 11 to reduce friction whilst the can is rotating. Arm 6 may serve as a guide member if suitably shaped.
