Abstract
689,222. Can-openers. TYM, J. March 20, 1951, No. 6673/51. Class 66 A can-opener of the traction-wheel type employing pincer-form construction to apply the necessary pressure between a serrated wheel and cutting element is characterised by the provision of a revolving cutter lying in a plane which is inclined to the plane containing the serrated wheel. Two lever like members 4 are pivoted at 5 and have moulded plastic handles 13. One lever carries a serrated wheel 1 secured to a shaft 8 which in turn is secured to a double-ended lever 9 of moulded plastic. The ends of lever 9 are curved in opposite directions as at 10 to receive conveniently the thumb and fingers of one hand. The end of lever 4 carrying the serrated wheel 1 is bent back to form a stop 12 for engaging the wall or top of the can and ensuring correct positioning of the wheel 1 during use. The end of the other lever 4 is bent over at 6 to form double bearings for a pivot pin 3 carrying a hardened cutter wheel 2. The axis of the cutter wheel 2 is inclined slightly with respect to the axis of the serrated wheel 1, and the pivot pin 3 is in the form of a threaded screw pin to enable the cutter wheel to be easily replaced when worn. Projections 16 on the levers 4 serve to limit the closing movement of the device.
