Abstract
613,114. Magnetic wire recording and reproducing apparatus. BRUSH DEVELOPMENT CO. Aug. 22, 1945, No. 21542. Convention date, Aug. 22, 1944. [Class 40 (ii)] In an apparatus for recording and reproducing sound on magnetic wire, the wire is carried on spools in a detachable unit separate from the part containing the driving means and the transducer, and is so arranged that driving engagement between the said driving means and 'the spools, and operative engagement between the wire and the transducer is automatically effected when the spool-containing unit is placed into position. In one form of construction, shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the spools 30-1, 30-2 are mounted freely on a shaft 45, but are coupled together by a spring-member 47 biassed in such a direction that the wire is always drawn taut over the guidepulleys 51, 52, 53-53 and 54. The wire is driven past the transducer 35, which bears on the wire between the pulleys 53, 53, by the motor 81 via the friction wheels 82, 84 or 84-1 (according to direction of drive), and 56. The wheel 56 is mounted on the shaft 55 which also carries the guide pulleys 51, 54, whereby drive of the wire from one spool to the other is effected. The motor 81 is of the type which may be reversed by suitable switching, and is operated, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, by a lever 91 which is spring- biassed to its centre position. Its operation causes the relay-coil 93 or 93-1 to be energized and the switch retained in position. A member 101, having arms 103, 104, Fig. 3, is moved up and down on a rod 102, Fig. 1, for even distribution of the wire on the spools, by a cam operated by the motor as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Extra switch-contacts, operated by the rod 115, are provided, which are parallel connected so that the motor-circuit cannot be broken until the member 101 has moved the fullest extent of its travel in one direction. Two further constructions are described and illustrated in Figs. 10 to 19 inclusive (not shown).
