Abstract

High melting polymeric trifluoromonochloroethylene is heated to between 400 DEG and 700 DEG C. to form the monomer, dimer and low melting polymers, which are promptly cooled. The pyrolysis is preferably carried out in a closed system in apparatus made of platinum, carbon or "Inconel" (R.T.M.), if desired in an atmosphere of nitrogen or helium under reduced pressure. Heat transfer media, e.g. fluorspar and carbon, may be present. The process may be continuous. The products may be separated by fractional condensation or fractional distillation. The putty-like waxy low melting polymers may be used as lubricants for valves and stopcocks, for extrusion as filaments and coatings on fabrics.ALSO:High melting polymeric trifluoromonochloroethylene is heated to between 400 DEG and 700 DEG C. to form the monomer, dimer and low melting polymers, which are promptly cooled.
