Abstract
A process for the continuous polymerization of styrene and homologues thereof, particularly alpha methyl styrene, comprises (1) subjecting a continuous stream of monomer to conditions to effect a predetermined partial polymerization in a vessel held at a temperature of 80 DEG to 110 DEG C., (2) substantially completing the polymerization by passing the material through a second vessel having a temperature gradient, e.g. from 120 DEG to 180 DEG C., with the higher temperature at the exit so as to maintain the material in a fluid condition, and (3) removing any volatile matter from the polymerized material by passing it in a subdivided fluid condition through a third and heated vessel in which a non-oxidizing atmosphere is maintained by means of an external vacuum pump or by passing an inert gas such as nitrogen, methane or carbon dioxide through the vessel. Particulars are given of the per cent power factor of mouldings of the polymers at each of several frequencies.
