Abstract

612,705. Coated fabrics. RAYBESTOSMANHATTAN, Inc. Aug. 23, 1943, No. 13722. Convention date, July 16, 1942. [Class 140] A friction element has an insert moulded into a mixture of asbestos, fillers and binder, the insert being a woven wire cloth coated with a baked non-metallic stiffening composition of partly inorganic or wholly organic materials capable of bending without substantial cracking and of withstanding temperatures in excess of 400‹ F. without decomposition. The coating may be applied to the wire cloth in solution or dispersion by methods such as spraying or dipping, the cloth is then baked to fix the coating in position and is slit or cut to smaller sizes, when the baked coating resists bending of the cut ends of the wires. Coating materials for the purpose are described as sodium silicate solution mixed with dextrine or formalin, zinc chromate dispersed in a drying oil medium with a solvent such as butyl acetate or mixed hydrocarbons, polymerised vinyl chloride, or vinyl chloride-acetate copolymers in a lacquer solvent such as butyl acetate, aqueous polyvinyl acetate emulsion, baking varnish of a drying oil such as linseed or China wood oil with resins such as phenolformaldehyde or oil soluble styrene resins. Urea-formaldehyde, alkyd, coumaroneindene resins and casein plastic materials are also mentioned. The baked coated wire cloth, after slitting, is embedded in the mixture of asbestos, fillers and binder and compressed or moulded into sheet or strip form. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 indicates that other suitable coatings include natural resins and certain cellulose nitrate or cellulose acetate base coatings as far as they stand temperatures in excess of 400‹ F. without decomposition. This subject matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
